Gillibrand asks evaluation for risks of medications like antibiotics in public supplies

ALBANY — U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand called Tuesday for a study to assess potential risks of trace levels of medications that have been found in drinking water supplies across the country. Gillibrand said she is offering an amendment to Water Infrastructure Financing Act that will set a two-year deadline for such a study by the Environmental Protection Agency and other federal regulators.
She said her request was sparked by a 2007 investigation by the Associated Press, which found low levels of medications in drinking water supplies of 24 major metropolitan areas. Drugs detected included antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers, and sex hormones.
"The federal government does not have adequate data on the long term health effects of these trace chemicals," Gillibrand said. "Parents count on the government to ensure clean, safe drinking water for all our families."
Her amendment, which still have to be accepted by a majority of her fellow senators, calls for a study to assess the risk, and offer ways of reducing or fixing it.
Gillibrand said there is no evidence to suggest that any drinking water is currently being rendered unsafe, adding that she and her family still routinely drink tap water.
Her amendment does not specify which drinking water systems ought to be tested, Other federal regulators that would be involved with EPA in designing the tests would be the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, she said.
According to the five-month AP investigation, drugs reach drinking water through the sewage system. When people take medications, a small amount of the drugs are passed out in bodily wastes. Sewage treatment plants do not remove pharmaceuticals before the water is returned to rivers, lakes or streams. Drinking water plants that take up water also do not treat it for pharmaceuticals.
For example, the The New York State Health Department and the U.S. Geological Survey tested the New York City's drinking water supply in the Catskills, and found trace concentrations of heart medicine, infection fighters, estrogen, anti-convulsants, a mood stabilizer and a tranquilizer.
Capital Region drinking water supplies were not part of the investigation.
According to the AP, recent research has found small amounts of medication can affect human embryonic kidney cells, human blood cells and human breast cancer cells. Also, pharmaceuticals in waterways are damaging wildlife, research shows. Male fish are being feminized, creating egg yolk proteins, a process usually restricted to females.

Last year, an administrative law judge (ALJ)* for the Federal Trade Commission upheld the pomegranate juice manufacturer’s right to make what the FDA would call structure/function claims in ads. Structure/function claims include statements such as “calcium helps build bones.” They don’t directly talk about curing a disease. At the same time, the ALJ found that some of the company’s claims went too far (specifically where they claimed the juice could help heart disease, prostate cancer, and erectile dysfunction).

If you research true medicine used since the beginning of time, it has come from plants. Just as our lifeline to God is in our blood (the life of the flesh Lev. 17:11), plants and trees have their lifeline in the chlorophyll and essential lipid soluble fluids synthesized in the leaf. Pharmaceuticals vs. Essential Oils
The word "doctor" is only mentioned three times in the entire Bible (Luke 2:46, 5:17 & Acts 5:34) and is never used to indicate a healer or a medical practitioner in the modern sense of the word, but is used to mean a teacher, rabbi or doctor of the law. However, a doctor of the law in biblical times was also a teacher of biblical health principles. This is the root of holistic health and naturopathy. In fact, if you look the word naturopathy up in the dictionary it means: a system of disease treatment using natural foods, light, warmth, massage, fresh air, regular exercise, and the avoidance of drugs. Supporters believe that illness can be healed naturally by the body.
Since when does a mainstream medical doctor ever sit down with a patient to teach them how to get well? The only thing they teach is how to take a script to the pharmacy and how to set up an appointment for surgery to get body parts cut out. A perfect correlation with the false trust in atheistic medicine is when King Asa contracted a foot disease that got worse through time. His choice was to seek the aid of physicians instead of looking to the LORD and His medicine. King Asa died as a consequence.
"And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians. And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign." (II Chronicles 16:12-13)
Another biblical example is found in Mark 5:25-34 and Luke 8:43-48. According to these passages, a certain woman had an issue of blood for 12 years and had suffered many things of many physicians (Medical Merry-Go-Round), and spent all she had (sound familiar?) and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse. There is an important lesson to be learned that is applicable to us today. When afflicted with disease, many seek out intercessory prayer and to be put on prayer lists while confessing healing with their lips, but their heart's faith is in doctors and hospitals. Separation of God from medicine is a deadly mistake witnessed by 300,000 deaths a year caused by doctor and hospital errors.
Pharmaceutical drugs are an inferior knock off of God's true medicine. Pharmaceutical companies have to continually strive to develop more powerful antibiotics to overcome the newly formed resistant strains that are so virulent. Why? Because it's just a matter of time before germs outsmart the strongest antibiotics. Virtually all antibiotic resistant super germs being battled are in hospitals where massive amounts of antibiotics and toxic topical antiseptics are used coupled with poor ventilation, closed windows and hygienic and sanitary negligence by doctors and hospital staff.

Most people have been given a New Age connotation toward essential oils with the stigma of the term aromatherapy. Many others think of oils as used only for anointing purposes for priests and holy artifacts. It is sustainably farmed and is steam distilled from the leaf. It has strengthening, focusing and revitalizing properties and a spicy, warm and clove like aroma. Cinnamon is a powerful oil that should be well diluted for topical uses. It is a strong base note in blends, and blends well with clove, orange, and patchouli.
Clove Bud (Eugenia caryophyllata) Clove Bud oil is derived from the buds of a cultivated evergreen tree. The flower buds are removed from the tree, dried and steam distilled. Generally, small farmers do the distillation and then sell the oil to collection centers. This well established system has provided a respectable living to a large number of small farmers in Indonesia. It has comforting, warming and stimulating properties and a spicy sweet aroma. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) Eucalyptus oil is derived from the namesake tree that is a tall, evergreen that grows to over 250 feet tall. Grapefruit, Pink (Citrus paradisi) The grapefruit tree is large, with glossy leaves, white flowers, and large pale yellow fruit with pink flesh. It grows to about 30 feet tall. The fruit is harvested for its juice and the peel is cold pressed for the essential oil, thereby minimizing waste. On the fourth day of the trial, however, there was a greater increase in the hunger score between 1–2 h after the 10% protein breakfast versus the 25% protein breakfast.

It depends. In most instances today the answer to this question is yes. That’s because the typical high carbohydrate diet is filled with way too much sugar, fruit drinks, soda, desserts, breads, pastas and a host of other high carb low/protein foods.
If your diet is made up of mainly whole foods and tilts towards the carbohydrate side it usually will not cause obesity unless you are very sedentary or don’t exercise at all. That’s because many good whole foods are also high in protein and they contain complex carbohydrates and fiber which slows the conversion rate from food to sugar in the body dramatically.

New research shows only one out of six overweight people can maintain even 10 percent of any weight loss over the long term. Now a new study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, has found a possible explanation: all calories are not created equal.
After losing about 30 pounds, 21 young adult participants were put on three different diets to see how they affected metabolism: low fat, low carb and low glycemic index. While on the low fat diet, people burned fewer calories, making it harder to keep off weight. People on the low carb diet burned the most calories, but had increased risk of heart disease, while the low glycemic diet offered medium calorie burning, with little risk of negative effects. Researchers say diets that reduce a blood sugar surge after a meal, either low glycemic or low carb, may be preferable to low fat for those trying to achieve lasting weight loss.
The researcher who led the study, Dr. David Ludwig, of Boston's Children Hospital stated on CBS This Morning, "These findings suggest, from a metabolic perspective, all calories are not alike. And for the best long-term outcomes, avoid restricting any major nutrients, either fat or carbohydrate, and focus on reducing refined carbs like white bread, white rice, potato products and sugary foods."
He added, "Our findings suggest that actually trying to restrict either carbs or fat is not the best way (to achieve long-term weight loss) and instead to focus on the quality of the fats and the quality of the carbs."
Ludwig said, "The traditional carbohydrates that we've eaten for thousands of years, for example steel-cut oats rather than instant oats or stone-ground breads rather than highly-processed breads, these traditional carbohydrates digest slowly and they slowly raise blood sugar slowly, so there isn't the same surge and crash.
"But all of the refined carbs that invaded our diets with the low-fat craze seems to lead to metabolic changes not only making us hungrier, but causing metabolism to fall. And that combination is a recipe for weight gain."
How Does A High Protein Diet Trigger Ketosis?
The metabolic state of ketosis simply means that the quantity of ketone bodies in the blood have reached higher than normal levels. When the body is in a ketogenic state this means that lipid energy metabolism is intact. This means that the body will start breaking down your own body fat to fuel the body's normal, every day functions. Ketones are formed when glycogen stores in the liver have run out. The ketones are used for energy.

How Much Protein Should I Consume Per Day?
This question is one that can evoke controversy because the recommendations are all over the place. The US RDA (if you trust them) for most men is 56 grams per day and for women it is 46 grams. Hard core bodybuilders have long used the rule of thumb of consuming 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. Unless you are working out to the extreme this amount could be far too high for the average person.
What many leading health experts who have studied this subject have learned is that approximately ½ gram per pound of bodyweight seems to be best. This means a 200 pound man would need 100 grams per day. This is usually a sufficient amount but your needs may be higher depending on the type of exercising you are doing. The truth is no grown man that wants to look and remain fit and muscular will ever be able to accomplish this by following the US RDA. Let’s face it, 56 grams of protein only amounts to 224 calories. The first event in the development of chronic disease is free radical damage to a cell membrane that is not immediately repaired. The unrepaired damage weakens the cell, and so, allows more free radical damage. The accumulation of the free radical damage causes the membrane to become dehydrated and rancid. Antioxidants from the food supply do not have the capability to significantly repair damaged membrane because they lack the concentrated amounts of nutrients that are needed to repair cellular damage. What Is NT Factor®?

WHAT IS FATIGUE AND HOW IS IT TREATED?
A number of questions were posed to Garth L. Nicolson, Ph.D., about this important issue. Here are some of the important excerpts from that interview.
Professor Nicolson, Why do people get chronic fatigue?
Chronic fatigue or fatigue that lingers and is not reversed by normal sleep occurs naturally during aging and in most degenerative diseases, including neurological, respiratory, coronary, musculoskeletal, metabolic and gastrointestinal diseases, infections and cancer.
Should we be concerned about fatigue, even if it’s a natural process of aging?
Absolutely! Chronic or intractable fatigue is the most common complaint of patients seeking medical care. It is also an important secondary condition in many degenerative diseases. If we are chronically fatigued, it is a sign at a cellular level that there may be significant damage to the mitochondria, which are the energy sources that are like little batteries inside our cells that provide cells with high energy molecules.
Why is that important?
Damage to mitochondrial components, especially mitochondrial membranes, which occurs mainly by oxidation, can result in increased ion leakage across mitochondrial membranes, and this can impair the ability of mitochondria to produce high-energy molecules needed for cellular metabolism, and eventually for cell survival and growth. It can be thought of like having the batteries in your flashlight leak through the protective outer insulation, and the result is loss of your light as the batteries are drained rather quickly.
What does that mean in laymen’s terms to our bodies?
It means that damage is happening to your cells every day from contaminants, toxins and other sources. It’s primarily caused by oxidation, and it’s like rust formation. When metals rust, they oxidize and eventually fall apart. The human body can be thought of as similar. When our cells “rust,” our cellular membranes are damaged, and small holes appear in the membranes that allows ions that are normally sequestered in particular compartments to flow freely, damaging cellular function. That’s how we can end up in an energy-deficient state. The mitochondria are no longer protected by the “rusted” membranes, and they can no longer produce high energy molecules. This is perceived as chronic tiredness or fatigue that sleep won’t alleviate.
What exactly in the cell gets damaged from this oxidation?
During aging and most chronic diseases the production of free radical oxidative molecules, such as Reactive Oxygen and Nitrogen species (ROS/RNS), can cause oxidative stress and cellular damage, resulting in oxidation of lipids, proteins and our genetic material or DNA. When oxidized, these molecules are structurally and sometimes functionally changed. These ROS/RNS molecules target mitochondria primarily in the lipid parts of the mitochondrial membranes, as well as cellular and mitochondrial DNA.
Why is this important?
Everyone needs to understand that when our cell membranes are damaged, it hinders our ability to create high energy molecules, and this can open us up to disease. With the replacement of the damaged or oxidized lipids, it is possible to rebuild the cell membrane and actually reverse the damage. If we can rebuild cell function, we can rebuild an oxidation damaged body. From a diseased state, this offers hope and healing.
From a healthy state, it offers longevity and it could hold off the effects of diseases associated with aging. The longer we can keep our cells healthy and producing energy, the longer we can live and enjoy active lives.
Is there something on the market now that can prevent this oxidative cell damage?
Dietary antioxidants and some accessory molecules, such as zinc, magnesium and certain vitamins, are important in maintaining antioxidant and free-radical scavenging systems that neutralize the damaging oxidants. In addition to zinc, magnesium and vitamins, there are at least 40 micronutrients required in the human diet, and aging increases their need to prevent age-associated damage to mitochondria and other cellular elements. Antioxidant use alone, however, may not be sufficient to maintain cellular components free of oxidative damage, and it cannot reverse the damage once it occurs. Can you expound upon Lipid Replacement Therapy?

Who hasn’t heard by now of the prescription drugs, Viagra and Cialis for erectile dysfunction (ED)? Huge numbers of males are now happier campers than in days bygone when this medication was not available. This week, a unique approach for those who are not quite ready to admit they need ED drugs.
Several months ago I wrote about a new product Neo40. I thought this remedy was too good to be true when I first read about it. Researchers reported that it helped those who fall asleep in the afternoon, decreased the risk of hypertension, osteoporosis and diabetes complications, lowered high cholesterol, eased the pain of arthritis, and assisted the immune system in fighting infection.
But it was hard to label this report as utter nonsense. After all, three of the researchers had received the prestigious Nobel Prize for this discovery. Louis J. Ignarro, one of the winners, says, “There may be no disease process where this miracle molecule does not have a protective role”. Now it appears that ED can also be added to the list.
Dr. Nathan Bryan at the University of Texas says the ingredient that helps all these problems is Nitric Oxide (NO). Bryan, who is a world authority on NO, says that for 100 years researchers have known that nitroglycerine eases coronary artery spasm by increasing the blood supply to the heart’s muscle. But until the Nobel Prize was awarded, no one knew this was due to Nitric Oxide.
Early in life we produce large amounts of NO in the endothelial lining of blood vessels. But after age 40, the production of NO decreases, causing arteries to constrict. This results in hypertension and inflammation in coronary arteries that kills one North American every 37 seconds.
But lack of NO also causes frustration in the bedrooms of the nation. That’s because adequate amounts of Nitric Oxide are also necessary to produce dilation of penile arteries. This allows sufficient amounts of blood to enter the penis resulting in an erection. The same applies to women. Without proper blood flow to the clitoris, they cannot experience orgasm or increased sexual sensitivity.
One thing surprised me. It was the number of readers, and some friends, who contacted me following publication of the Neo40 column. They too experienced a pleasant surprise after starting Neo40. The scientific community has known for some time now that nitric oxide is involved in virtually every biological process in the body. However, its association with Alzheimer's disease has been less defined.
Nitric oxide (NO) is primarily responsible for maintaining normal blood pressure, fighting off infections, and helping our brain cells communicate with each another. As a result, NO insufficiency may manifest itself in many different ways. We thought for years that the primary manifestation was in the form of hypertension or high blood pressure, but we now understand and appreciate that too little NO in the body can make us susceptible to disease or infection due to the inability of our immune system to make sufficient NO to attack and kill invading pathogens.
Research recently published out of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine now shows very clearly that too little NO produced in the body is associated with Alzheimer's disease. While there is a clear disruption in the NO pathway in Alzheimer's patients, what is still not clear is if NO insufficiency is the cause of the amyloid plaques or if the development of the amyloid plagues are causing a disruption in normal NO production and signaling.
Regardless of which one comes first, what the data clearly show is that insufficient NO production in Alzheimer's contributes to the progression of the disease. Without sufficient NO produced in the brain, there is reduced blood flow and oxygen delivery and reduced cellular communication between our neurons.
Restoring NO production in Alzheimer's may be a first line of defense for the progression of the disease and the cognitive decline. What we need to understand going forward is if pre-Alzheimer's patients given supplemental NO can be protected or prevented from further development of Alzheimer's. These most recent data clearly build a strong case for Neo40 as a daily preventive regimen not only for cardiovascular disease but now also suitable as ammunition against Alzheimer's.
According to the World Health Organization, in 2004 some 4.9 million people worldwide became infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS. Last year the total number of people with HIV rose to its highest level ever. An estimated 39.4 million people are currently living with the virus. In the U.S. 40,000 new cases are reported each year.
The problem with treating HIV? Unlike antibiotics that kill bacteria, antiviral drugs can only reduce the severity of infections; they do not eliminate them completely. To date, no drugs have been developed that can effectively eradicate viruses and cure the illnesses they cause.
HIV attacks and weakens the immune system. As the efficiency of the immune system decreases, other viruses, as well as bacteria and fungi, are able to take hold and infect the body. These secondary infections are what cause most of the pain and discomfort, and ultimately the death, of AIDS victims. For this reason, HIV patients are given drug cocktails consisting of a mixture of antibiotics, antiviral and antifungal agents. Anti-cancer drugs are usually included in the mix because the weakened immune system often allows cancer to develop. Adverse reactions and toxic side effects often result.
Over the years medical science has made great strides in AIDS treatment. With the proper treatment and lifestyle choices, life expectancy for HIV-infected individuals has increased. Antiretroviral drugs are able to slow down the progression of the disease. But for the vast majority of HIV-infected people, drug therapy is not a viable option. The cost to control the virus using standard HIV medications for one person can easily amount to over $15,000 US a year. This is far beyond the ability of most of those infected to pay.
Finding a safe and effective, yet affordable, treatment is the only way to bring relief to the millions who suffer from HIV/AIDS. Fortunately, researchers may have now found a potential solution to this problem: coconut oil. Although coconut oil may appear to be an unlikely hero, recent medical research shows that it holds great promise in the treatment of HIV/AIDS.
Coconut oil is composed of a unique group of fats known as medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). When eaten, our bodies transform MCTs into medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) and monoglycerides, both of which possess powerful antiviral properties. Knowledge of coconut oil’s effect on HIV has been circulating in the AIDS community ever since Icelandic researcher Halldor Thormar began publishing studies on this topic in the early 1990s. Since then, HIV-infected individuals have reported success lowering their viral loads and improving their overall health by adding coconut oil or coconut products into their diets.
AIDS victim Tony V., 38, is one of these success stories. Tony’s experience lends hope to millions of AIDS sufferers worldwide. Coconut oil changed his life and gave him newfound hope.
In the late 1990s Tony worked as a waiter and florist in Saudi Arabia. It was here that he contracted the disease that altered his life. Coming home to the Philippines in 2002, Tony was devastated to learn that he was infected with HIV.
As time progressed, Tony’s health slowly deteriorated. Secondary infections ravaged his body. By July 2003, mounting health problems brought him to the hospital.
The drugs he was taking could not stop the progression of the disease. His body was covered with fungal infections and skin lesions, he was losing weight, and had repeated bouts of vomiting and diarrhea accompanied by fever, chronic fatigue, oral candidiasis, and various other infections including chronic pneumonia with a persistent cough. Skin infections covered his head, face, and body. His doctor diagnosed him with full-blown AIDS and told him to get his affairs in order.
He was released from the hospital with prescriptions to keep the infections in check that were still raging in his body. But because he was too sick to work, he could not afford to buy the medications. Feelings of hopelessness surrounded him. “I felt like a candle that was starting to flicker and die,” he said.
Unable to afford medication, he sought help from the Department of Health. He was referred to Dr. Conrado Dayrit, the author of the first clinical study on the healing effects of coconut oil on HIV-infected patients, which was conducted at the San Lazaro hospital in the Philippines.
Dr. Dayrit told him about the healing virtues of coconut oil. Tony was instructed to apply the oil to the sores and infections on his skin three times a day and consume six tablespoonfuls daily. At first, Tony was skeptical that coconut oil would have much of an effect on his health. He had a small wound on his foot that refused to heal, so he experimented by putting a little oil on it every day. After three days the wound was completely healed. Encouraged by the results, he began the coconut oil regimen in earnest.
Within a short time noticeable changes were seen in Tony’s appearance. As he realized the healing that was beginning to happen to his skin, he started to “bathe” in the oil, applying it from head to toe three times daily. The skin infections faded.
When Tony went to the hospital for his periodic blood tests the doctors were amazed. “They were all excited and couldn’t understand what was happening,” says Tony. “They asked me what I was taking. I told them I was using coconut oil.” They couldn’t believe that something as simple as coconut oil was killing the virus and infections better than their drugs.
HIV attacks white bloods cells known as T4 cells. The severity of the virus can be determined by measuring the number of T4 cells in the body. This is called a CD4 count. On average, a healthy individual will have a CD4 count between 535 and 1,145. HIV infected individuals usually have CD4 levels below normal. As the disease progresses, CD4 levels continue to drop.
Tony’s CD4 count on diagnosis was 270. A year later when he was admitted to the emergency room, it had fallen to 226. After using coconut oil for a few months it rebounded to 274, still low but steadily rising — a clear sign he was improving!
His progress was remarkable. His skin completely healed. The low-grade fever and symptoms of pneumonia are now gone. Candidiasis gone. Chronic fatigue gone. Diarrhea and vomiting gone. You couldn’t tell by his appearance that just a few months earlier he had been diagnosed with AIDS. Although Tony may never be completely free from the virus, he can at least live a more normal life and enjoy day-to-day activities.
The social workers and the medical staff handling his case, impressed by his rapid improvement, are now using coconut oil themselves for general health purposes.
Less than nine months after starting the coconut oil odyssey, Tony stood for the first time before an audience to tell his story. “HIV virus has not been curable until now,” he said. “The antiretrovirals cannot control the infection, which is why a lot of my friends died. Doctors cannot predict how long I will live. When I was diagnosed, my doctors told me I wouldn’t live another three months. Well, here I am now. I’m still standing. Maybe I have a mission to share my experience with all whom I meet.
“People like me who have HIV/AIDS are scared. But you don’t need to be afraid now. Years ago tuberculosis was a worldwide epidemic, but eventually they found the cure. For HIV, maybe virgin coconut oil is the solution the world has been looking for.”

Studies have shown that MCFA are not only effective at killing HIV but also a large number of lipid-coated viruses that cause a number of diseases, including the measles virus, herpes simplex virus, hepatitis C, stomatitis virus (VSV), and cytomegalovirus (CMV). MCFA also kill lipid-coated bacteria as well as some fungi and parasites, including Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Staphylococcus aureus, Helicobacter pylori, Candida albicans, and giardia.
Coconut oil is composed predominately of MCFAs and also alleviates many of the opportunistic infections that commonly afflict AIDS patients. Unlike the drug cocktails used to treat HIV/AIDS, coconut oil is a completely harmless, natural product that has been used safely as a food for thousands of years. It has no harmful side effects.
Some of the most common symptoms associated with AIDS include chronic diarrhea, fat malabsorption, malnutrition, weight loss, wasting, and various complications with secondary infections. Studies have reported significant improvement in all of these conditions when patients are given diets containing coconut oil or medium chain triglycerides. For instance, C.A. Wanke and colleagues took 24 adult patients with HIV who were suffering from chronic diarrhea, fat malabsorption, and weight loss. Patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups. Medium chain triglycerides were added to the diet of one group. The other group served as the control. The researchers reported that those that received the MCT demonstrated significantly decreased stool number, stool fat, and stool weight, indicating a marked improvement in their nutritional statues. With better nutrient absorption comes improved health and better immune function. P. Gelas and colleagues report that along with improved digestion and weight gain, CD4/CD8 lymphocyte ratios also improve in MCT-fed patients, indicating improved immune function.
The organization Keep Hope Alive has documented several cases in which HIV/AIDS patients have reported marked improvement after consuming coconut products. In some cases all evidence of the infection were removed. For example, one man dropped his viral load from 600,000 to non-detectable levels in just 2 months by consuming a bowl of coconut and cooked cereal every day along with eating a healthy diet containing lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. He was not using any antiviral drugs.
In a second case, a person with a viral load of 900,000 ate half a coconut a day. After 4 weeks, his viral load dropped to around 350,000. After the second month, his viral load remained the same and his doctor added the drug Crixivan to his protocol. After 4 weeks, his viral load dropped to non-detectable levels. Unlike the first case cited above, this person ate a typical American diet that included ample amounts of junk food. His progress would have been quicker with a better diet.
In another case, a man consumed a glass of coconut milk daily for 4 weeks. His viral load for HIV dropped from 30,000 to 7,000. Both his CD4 and CD8 counts doubled. He used no antivirals.
The first clinical study using coconut on HIV-patients was reported by Conrado Dayrit, MD, in 1999. In this study 14 HIV infected individuals were given daily 3 tablespoons of coconut oil or monolaurin (coconut oil derived dietary supplement). No other antivirals or treatment were used. Six months later 60 percent of the participants showed noticeable signs of improvement. Improvement was measured by increased CD4 count, lowered viral load, and better overall health. This was the first study to demonstrate in a clinical setting that coconut oil does have an antiviral impact and could be used successfully to treat HIV-infected individuals.
The amount of coconut oil used is important. The higher the dosage, the more effective it is in deactivating the virus and other pathogenic organisms. The participants in Dr. Dayrit’s study consumed only 3½ tablespoons a day; Tony consumed 6 tablespoons. Case histories of those who have used coconut oil with other therapies indicate that diet and lifestyle are also important. Eating a healthy diet and avoiding junk foods helps strengthen the immune system and improves the success rate. An ample amount of coconut oil combined with a healthy diet looks promising as a safe and affordable treatment for HIV.
Since coconuts can grow in many of areas of the world where HIV is a major health problem, coconut oil appears to be a feasible and exciting solution to this worldwide epidemic. ■
