As many as 24 American states are experiencing an alarming loss of honeybees, which are dying out and this poses a serious threat to many crops.
American beekeepers have experienced regional problems before but there has never been a national cause for concern as there is now, because bees pollinate more than $14bn (£7bn) worth of American-grown crops each year.  There has been no definite cause for the bees dying but viruses, mites, fungi and pesticides could all be to blame it is claimed. The researchers investigation the threat to bees and farming have found that the bees are dying away from the hives and think that pesticides banned in some European countries may be causing the bees to be unable to find their way home.Crops such as avocados, kiwis and California almonds are amongst those hit by the crisis and it is feared the problem could prove the breaking point for even large beekeepers. In the UK honeybees have also been seriously declining due to the varroa mite and some species of bumblebee are now seriously endangered as well. The investigators are exploring a range of possibilities to explain the losses, which they are calling "colony collapse disorder". These include viruses, a fungus and poor bee nutrition. Crusador Comment: It's interesting that the news media and scientific organizations report this problem going on with the bees but they act baffled as to why the bees are dying off. The reasons are not hard to figure out. Farmers across North America have been blitzing their fields with millions of tons of herbicides and pesticides for decades. And since the mid to late 1990's massive numbers of genetically engineered crops have been planted. In a book I wrote titled "GMOs - Beware of the Coming Food Apocalypse," I designated an entire chapter to the damaging environmental effects of this technology. In one German study done at the University of Jena they tested bees on a field of genetically engineered rapeseed (canola). The bees were released onto the crop and then took the pollen back to their hive and fed it to young bees. When scientists analyzed the bacteria in the gut of the young bees they discovered that it contained the same gene traits as those of the modified crops.
