Like many, you’re probably looking for natural ways to enhance your immune system this fall and winter, especially as kids are back in school and flu fears reach fever pitch. The beehive has long been known to contain substances that have protective and rejuvenating powers. Modern science has only recently “re-discovered” the tremendous health benefits that many of our ancestors knew long ago about beehive products. Bees are clearly the most extraordinary insects in nature. Imbedded into their DNA is a wisdom and knowledge that makes them uniquely superior and distinct to all other insects. Bees are gifted with a remarkable ability to extract the most powerful life-giving substances found in nature. Laboratory analysis has discovered that these substances are abundantly rich in vital nutrients and therapeutic properties that have the ability to nourish and protect not only the hive, but also mankind.
Beehive products have been treasured substances since the beginning of time. In some civilizations their value was equal to that of gold and fine jewels. Everyone is familiar with honey. It is the most abundant product derived from the beehive. Honey has been referred to as nature’s antibiotic because it contains extremely potent nutritional properties that act as a preservative and disinfectant. It was so well known for these purposes that it was used as an embalming agent in ancient societies. It was even discovered in tombs of ancient Egyptian kings and priests. Honey also has great biblical support to back up its value. In the Bible God refers to His word being as sweet as honey. When Jesus (Yahshua) resurrected from the dead and enjoyed a meal with his apostles by the Sea of Galilee he consumed was a honeycomb (Luke 24:42).
In addition to honey, there are three other substances derived from the hive that have great physical and spiritual importance. They are Propolis, Royal Jelly and Bee Pollen – a virtual trinity of powerhouse foods.
What Is Propolis?
Propolis is a dark resinous material harvested by the bees from the leaf buds and bark of many different trees. Just as humans have blood that carries the life force to every cell in the body, tree resin is the life force that carries life and protection to every part of the tree. One of the primary functions of resin is to protect the trees from harmful pathogens. Bees gather this resinous substance because they instinctively know that it contains antibiotic, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiseptic properties. Once gathered and brought back to the hive they re-metabolize it with nectar, wax flakes, pollen and other bee materials where it becomes propolis.
Propolis serves as the primary substance that keeps the beehive healthy and disease free. It is also used as a cementing and water proofing agent to seal the hive. In the Book of Revelation 22:2 we come across a very interesting passage:
“And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
Could it be that these leaves are full of beneficial resins and that’s why they are for the healing of the nations? It’s very interesting to speculate in light of the fact that the bees have zeroed in on this substance.
In order to survive bees must live in a completely sterile environment. To achieve this, they masterfully construct their hives with an abundance of propolis. They also build a propolis shield at the gateway of the hive so that all the bees re-entering the “city” walk across this powerful disinfectant. Inside the hive, the Queen bee will not lay any eggs inside a honeycomb until it has been layered in propolis.
Propolis derives its name from two Greek words – Pro and Polis. The definition of Pro is to be in front of, or before something. Polis means city. Put together as Propolis, it means to be in front of the city or before the city. Since a disinfectant shield is built around the city gate of the hive, the resinous substance gathered from the trees to build this shield was given the name propolis.
Propolis has been used effectively for many years to treat a number of health problems such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, sore throats, colds, flu, allergies, sinusitis, stomach disorders, herpes, liver damage, skin problems, radiation injury, arthritis, bad breath and gynecological disorders.
Although propolis has had a period of relative obscurity with regard to its medical uses, it was still being applied to slow-healing wounds during the Boer War, and even during WWII in Russia. It has been given the name “Russian Penicillin” because it has long been used to fight viruses and heal infections. After 1945, little attention was paid to the study of natural medicinal substances in the West because resources were being concentrated on the development of chemically synthesized drugs. First century historian Pliny mentioned the uses of tree resins in general, but also went into considerable detail when dealing with propolis.
“First they construct combs and mould wax, that is, construct their homes and cells, then produce offspring, and afterwards honey, wax from flowers, bee-glue from the droppings of gum-producing trees – the sap, glue and resin of the willow, elm and reed. They first smear the whole interior of the hive itself with these as with a kind of stucco, and then with other bitterer juices as a protection against the greed of other small creatures, as they know that they are going to make something that may possibly be coveted; with the same materials they also build wider gateways round the structure.”
Even though propolis is derived from a wide variety of tree resins, it has shown uniform constituents in numerous laboratory tests. Propolis is made up of 50-55 percent resin and balsam, up to 30 percent wax, about 8-10 percent fragrant essential oils and about 5 percent solid matter. It is rich in fats, amino acids, organic acids, trace elements such as iron, copper, manganese, zinc, silica, potassium, phosphorus and others, tannic acid and antibiotics. Apart from this, it has high vitamin content, especially those of the B group. Further analysis also shows a formidable list of strange sounding ingredients called bioflavonoids including cinnamic acid, cinnamyl alcohol, vanillin, chrysin, galangin, acacetin, kaempferid, rhamnocitrin, pinostrobin, caffeic acid, tetochrysin, isalpinin, pinocembrin and ferulic acid.
With flu pandemics and infectious diseases making headline news on a daily basis, adding products with Propolis to your supplement program makes wise sense. It’s time to come out of the Babylonian pharmaceutical system and shield your body with Propolis – one of God’s most wonderful all natural substances.
What Is Royal Jelly?
Royal Jelly is a concentrated super food that is responsible for turning an ordinary worker bee into a Queen. For millennia, beekeepers have known of the nearly supernatural power of royal jelly. It is a creamy white substance secreted exclusively from the pharyngeal glands of a special group of young female bees and then utilized as a special nutrient food within the hive. Because it is so nutrient dense, it is fed to all young bees in their early growth period.
But even more interestingly, when a hive is in need of a new queen, royal jelly is fed exclusively to a newly designated female worker bee. Something in this royal jelly has the miraculous ability to convert this ordinary female into a super Queen bee. Royal jelly is the only food fed to the Queen during the duration of her reign which incidentally, is the longest lived and largest of all bees in the hive. The Queen bee is more than 50% larger than all other bees and can live between 5-8 years compared to other female bees whose life span is between 6-8 weeks.
Because of this special longevity and growth power exhibited by royal jelly consumption, some people speculate that there are unknown factors in this highly concentrated substance that may be beneficial for humans as well. It is so highly complex that it has not been possible to fully analyze it. Royal jelly is known to contain natural hormones, all of the B-complex vitamins, nucleic acids, essential amino acids, essential fatty acids (especially Omega 3’s), acetylcholine, lecithin, inositol, biotin, folic acid, collagen, gamma globulin and trace minerals.
Royal jelly has been referred to as the crown jewel of the beehive and has long been used as a health rejuvenator, immune system booster, energy enhancer and natural antidepressant. Fresh royal jelly is a liquid substance containing approximately 67% water. When taken from the hive it must be kept refrigerated or frozen because the water content will make it spoil. When it is mixed with honey the honey acts as a preservative and its shelf life is extended greatly. Pure royal jelly can also be put through a special freeze-drying process where its medicinal properties will last for years without refrigeration. This process is known as lyophilizing, which is a dehydration process that removes the water from a substance by exposure to dry, freezing air. No heat or chemicals are involved. Lyophilized royal jelly is a freeze-dried powder in which all of the nutrients of fresh royal jelly are still present.
What Is Bee Pollen?
Bee pollen is often referred to as nature’s most perfect food because it contains nearly every element required for sustaining life – including over 22 amino acids, every vitamin known to man, 28 different minerals and trace minerals, 11 enzymes and co-enzymes, bioflavonoids, phytosterols, Omega 3 fatty acids, carbohydrates, carotenoids, globulins, lecithin, quercetin, rutin, hormones and other biologically active compounds.
Beekeepers know very well the importance pollen plays in the life of the bee. For a long time they observed that among the strongest, most productive hives, were those that made great provisions of pollen. Bee pollen consists of blended pollen grains collected by honeybees from a wide variety of plants. Worker bees travel from flower to flower collecting this amazing substance on their legs. While collecting pollen, bees perform the service of pollinating plants. Windborne pollens are responsible for most pollen allergies, not sticky pollen that is collected by the bees. The nutritive, detoxifying and healing properties of bee pollen have been appreciated for years. Bee pollen has helped allergies, fatigue, infertility, impotence, varicose veins, recovery from illness and surgery and prostate troubles.
Endless research and experiments conducted in European and Russian institutes, clinics and hospitals, have shown that bee pollen is extremely valuable in cases of pernicious anemia. It has also been found to help with regulating the functioning of the entire digestive system, immune system, increasing the appetite, lowering arterial tension, improving the capacity to work, increasing the count of hemoglobin, helping nervous conditions, insomnia, and inflammation.
As we struggle with a number of devastating degenerative diseases, fatal infections and mysterious illnesses, beehive products clearly offer a non-toxic, safe and beneficial alternative to pharmaceutical based options. If you’re not currently taking these products, adding them to your daily regimen would be a great health investment. Find out for yourself what all “the buzz” is about.
