Crusador: Scott, why you are so passionate about these unique sea plants and what they can do for your health?

Crusador:  How did you get interested in the study of seaweed for human health and what is your background?
 
I have been active in understanding and educating myself in the area of human nutrition, cellular biology and marine biology as it relates to marine algae since 1983. I have been a full time nutrition-health professional since 1993. Over the past twenty years the public’s interest in food supplements has increased dramatically. This interest manifests both in the steadily increasing demand for alternative medical practices, and increasing sophistication by the public in understanding their own biology. All alternative health practitioners promote dietary modifications and proper supplementation, even though most aren’t trained in nutrition beyond the need for “multi-vitamins.” In fact, I have trained many chiropractors, acupuncturists, and naturopaths, massage therapists and doctors in the area of organic nutrition. My greatest commitment is to the American public. I have had very little success with those who already know it all!
 
I was on my way to a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration at the University of Texas, Austin and an investor in Real Estate in 1983 when a personal experience changed the course of my life. Shortly thereafter I was led to a sea vegetation-based dietary supplement by an Iridologist who recommended he place his mother on a daily regimen. She suffered with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and moved into miraculous remission within 90 days as per an M.R.I. and according to her neurologist.
 
In 1985 I founded Sea Veg, USA (now FarmaSea® Health LLC). I began researching and promoting the value of sea vegetation in human nutrition. Studying under my mentor, Dr. Joseph V. Wachter, Jr., who passed away in 1988, I was privy to the large body of research and documentation amassed by him and his father.

Crusador: Tell us a little bit about the history of seaweed?
 
Seaweed as a staple item of diet has been used in Japan and China since prehistoric times. In 600 BC, Sze Teu wrote in China, "Some algae are a delicacy fit for the most honored guests, even for the King himself." Some 21 species are used in everyday cookery in Japan, six of them since the 8th century. Seaweed accounts for some 10% of the Japanese diet and seaweed consumption reached an average of 3.5 kg per household in 1973, a 20% increase in 10 years.
 
The oldest book in Iceland, dating back to 961 B.C., includes detailed regulations about coastal property rights to be respected in the collection of sea vegetables.
 
There are records of sea plants being collected and eaten by the coastal populations of Northern Europe, as well as by the people around the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas.
 
The Native American Indians such as the Eskimos used sea vegetation for eating and healing throughout their history.
 
In Europe, Mediterranean seaweeds were used as fodder and as an herbal medicine in Greek and Roman times. Greeks used seaweed as animal food as early as 100 BC. In 46 BC, the Greeks collected seaweed. In the Mediterranean, some red algae were used as sources of dying agents and as a medicine to treat parasitic worms since pre-Christian times. For hundreds of years, seaweed has been used for food and fertilizer. In Ireland, people started collecting algae in 1200 AD. Edible seaweed has been used for a very long time in Ireland and Scotland.
 
The ancient Hawaiians grew kelp gardens. They used 60-70 species of seaweed for food, medicine, ceremonies and leis. In Ireland, Palmaria was, and is, known under a variety of Gaelic and English names: duileasc, Creathnach, dulse and dillisk, expressing clearly the long usage and perhaps also the great variation in habit and habitat of this species. There are very early records of the use of Palmaria here and elsewhere in the North Atlantic. Dillisk, Palmaria palmatais known under a wide variety of names in the north Atlantic and has been used in Scotland, Norway, Canada and Iceland. Mention of this species is made in the early herbals in Britain and Ireland, mainly late 17th century and early 18th century, sometimes as a vermifuge and sometimes even as a sex attractant (Guiry 1978).
 
Crusador: Explain to our readers why the iodine content of these sea plants makes them critically necessary?
 
The most damaging effect of iodine deficiency is on the developing brain, and to a lesser degree, any brain. Thyroid hormone is particularly important for myelination of the central nervous system, which is most active in the perinatal period and during fetal and early postnatal development. Numerous population studies have correlated an iodine-deficient diet with increased incidence of mental retardation. A meta-analysis of 18 studies concluded that iodine deficiency alone lowered mean IQ scores by 13.5 points (Bleichrodt and Born, 1994). Iodized salt is a special case. With only a few isolated exceptions, edible salt (sodium chloride) does not naturally contain iodine. Either potassium iodide or potassium iodate is used to fortify salt in 98% of U.S. Households (only found in 3% of English Households). These compounds are pharmaceutically manufactured by drug companies in order to create “stability” but with a side effect of HYPO and HYPER thyroidism, which has grown to now epidemic proportions since the 1930’s when they were instituted in the name of iodine by the WHO.
 
In addition to these effects on the individual, iodine deficiency has adverse consequences for the community. The mental retardation can cover a wide range, from mild blunting of intellect to full blown cretinism (see “Zombieland”), and a large part of the population may have some intellectual impairment. The mean IQ of the deficient community is decreased by at least 13.5 IQ points, according to one review. Individuals in these communities have lower educability and lower economic productivity, and the output of the whole community suffers. Dramatic improvement typically occurs after appropriate addition of vegetable, organic iodine, as found in the FarmaSea® Blend of Sea Plants (FBSP).
 
Other consequences of iodine deficiency are impaired reproductive outcome, increased childhood mortality, decreased educability, and economic stagnation.
 
There are 177 Mcg’s of iodine in one capsule of Super Sea Veg.  So in 3 capsules, there is 531 Mcg’s of VEGETABLE iodine.  The Government states that the Tolerable Upper Intake Level of (iodide/iodate in the salt) for adults is 1.1 mg/day.   The Japanese ingest over 7.7 mgs of iodine EVERY DAY!  Their IQ is 15 pts higher than Americans across their population.
 
Worldwide there are about 200 million who suffer under-active thyroid which at any age can disturb regulation in almost any tissue in the body. There are legitimate theories that the only powerful “food” that could have grown in the desert to feed millions of Israelites on a daily basis would be single cell macro marine algae. There is a white single cell species native to that area. If the conditions were right, in the morning hours, given the condensation on the rocks and the mineral-rich dirt within this ancient sea bed called the Sinai Desert, when the sun‘s rays hit the moist rocks and dirt, in conjunction with the Hand of God, this “Manna” (Hebrew for “what is it”), would appear, and then dry and turn fluffy white, and blow in the morning breeze like snow.
 
Crusador: Why are sea nutrients far superior to most of the vitamins and supplements on the market?
 
As far as supplements go, the accepted scientific agreement is that synthetic chemicals are the same as organic molecules to the body. This is a lie. They have ZERO food value, are highly acidic and pH imbalanced (i.e.: ascorbic ACID). We aren’t missing yellow synthetic powders in our diet. So multi-vitamins, up to now, are really just multiple synthetics. Phytochemicals come from photo (light) synthesis. Now that thousandsof phytochemicals have been observed in plants and they can’t be synthesized and placed into their scientific multiple, there is a nutrition gap. Correction, there always has been!
 
Without being religion-specific, God heals His creation, with His creation. This is the phytochemical revolution.   Why is it a revolution? Because we will return/revolve to where we once were, and know it for the first time.
