Turmeric: Spicy Route To Weight Loss
A 5/28/09 story from the website www.ngrguardiannews.com noted turmeric as being beneficial for weight loss. “It is a local spice commonly used for culinary. It resembles ginger with its near-yellow colour. It has been effectively used in pain, wounds, diabetes and heart disease. But recent United States study found that eating turmeric flavoured meals could be the best way to shedding excess kilos. CHUKWUMA MUANYA reports. Turmeric, an Asian spice cultivated in Nigeria and found in many curries, has a long history of use in reducing inflammation, healing wounds and relieving pain, preventing diabetes and heart failure, but can it induce weight loss? The local spice, turmeric, has entered into herbal regimen for weight loss programme. A recent United States (U.S.) study suggests that turmeric may be a new way to spice up weight loss routine.”
Turmeric May Help Prevent Alzheimer's
A 6/3/09 story from BBC News reported that, “ Eating a curry once or twice a week could help prevent the onset of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, a US researcher suggests. The key ingredient is curcumin, a component of the spice turmeric. Curcumin appears to prevent the spread of amyloid protein plaques - thought to cause dementia - in the brain.”
Turmeric Recipes May Have Healing Powers
A story from the website www.huliq.com reported the following about Turmeric: “Recipes using the Indian spice Turmeric may have healing powers. The Journal of the American Chemical Society published a study identifying a component of turmeric called curcumin that actually resists infection. Turmeric recipes may tap into that healing power. Health Day reports researchers in the study discovered that curcumin molecules insert themselves into cell membranes, making the membranes more stable. The stability seems to boost a cell’s resistance to infection.”
Turmeric Shows Anti-Cancer Benefits

An extract that is found in the bright yellow curry spice turmeric actually kills cancer cells, The BBC News reports of a study from the Cork Cancer Research Centre in Ireland. Scientists and all those famous ‘old wives’ have long thought that the chemical, which is called curcumin, has healing powers for everything from arthritis to dementia. But now, there is actual proof that it deals a fatal blow to esophageal cancer cells--at least in the lab. Led by Dr. Sharon McKenna, the team found that curcumin started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours. It does this by triggering lethal cell death signals that when received by the cancer cells causes those cells to digest themselves.”
