International award-winning filmmaker Kevin P. GENERATION RX is a film about families who confronted horror and found nowhere to turn for help - and how scores of children have been caught in the vortex of mind-bending drugs at the earliest stages of their growth and development. This powerful documentary also questions whether we have forced millions of children onto pharmaceutical drugs for commercial rather than scientific reasons.

Ultimately, Generation RX may help parents decide whether the perceived benefits of these medications outweigh the serious risks to children.

Shortly after the release of GENERATION RX, Crusador editor Greg Ciola had the opportunity to interview Kevin Miller about his new film. Below is a transcript of that interview.

Crusador:  Kevin, I am honored to interview you. You’re a true hero in my eyes for the excellent work you’ve done in the past and are doing now to fight against the injustices of big pharma and their agenda to destroy our health and poison us all.  The issue of psychotropic drugs being pushed on schoolchildren to the level they have been is a hot button issue with me. What motivated you to produce your new documentary?

My interest in this issue actually began in 1993 when I was researching for my film LET TRUTH BE THE BIAS, a documentary about the FDA-orchestrated raid on Dr. Jonathan Wright and the threat to health freeedom. I found  some rare footage from the 1991 FDA hearings on Prozac where Dozens of Americans stood before their government to warn FDA of the awful side effects of that drug and told horrific stories of violence and suicide — warnings that the FDA ignored. It really moved me.

At that point I knew that some day I would produce a film that would honestly show the facts and tell the stories of real people — and that’s what GENERATION RX really is.

Crusador:  What are some of the issues you address in the film?

For decades, scores of doctors, government officials, journalists, and others have extolled the benefits of psychiatric medicines for children. GENERATION RX presents the rest of the story and unveils how this era of unprecedented change in Western culture really occurred – that of drugging kids earlier — and more often — than ever before. The film lays out the shoddy science used to approve ADHD drugs, antidepressants and antipsychotic medications, and the collusion and conflicts of interests that are so prevalent in the mental health field.

Crusador:   Are there any shocking things you discovered during your investigation that really highlight the film’s message?

My biggest shock came when I realized how deep and pervasive the conflicts-of-interest really are. There is one scene in the film that really underscores the depths of the problem. It involves a prominent FDA official who helped to cover-up the side effects of Prozac — a man who also approved SSRI drugs for kids — and how his actions directly effected a friend of his own family. That scene still gives me the chills and I’ve seen it hundreds of times.

Crusador:  Do you just focus on anti-depressant drugs being prescribed to children in the film or do you cover other drugs as well?

GENERATION RX deals very specifically with all of the psychiatric medications currently being prescribed to millions of children and teens. There is an entire chapter of the film dealing with ADHD drugs like Ritalin and the rest of the stimulants, but we also tackle the antipsychotics prescribed for so-called bipolar disorder, in addition to an exhaustive examination of antidepressant use among kids.

Crusador:  What are some of the worst tragedies or side effects you uncover in the film from the mass drugging of our youth?

That it didn’t have to happen, Greg. The film very clearly lays out that we have allowed psychiatry — the least scientific of all of medicine — to sidestep the bounds of what the FDA calls “safe and effective.” We have numbed too many of our young Galileo’s with these powerful drugs without concern for the long-term effects, and as a result, we’ve seen thousands of children committing violent acts and suicides, just for starters.

The worst part of this is that one of the side effects of Ritalin and the stimulant medicines, for example, is the very real possibility that a child or teen will have a psychotic reaction. If a kid gets a psychotic reaction, then doctors and psychiatrists often use this as an opportunity to label the kid as bipolar. Once they’re labeled bipolar, they prescribed antipsychotics for life! These drugs are being used far too cavalierly. It is both unethical and immoral — and needs to be stopped.

Crusador:  What kind of future do you see if the current trend is not reversed as far as what our society will be like?

Well, considering the trend, we are going to see tens of millions of our future leaders on these drugs if we don’t recognize the folly of our ways. The rampant overuse of these drugs must be reversed or we face a frightening prospect. But I am an optimist, as you know Greg. I believe we have the Angels on our side.

Crusador:  Who were some of the experts you interviewed in the film?

Pulitzer-Prize-nominated science writer Robert Whitaker; Alvin F. Poussaint, MD from Harvard; Barry Turner, a lecturer in Law & Medical Ethics from Lincoln University in the UK; Karen-Barth Menzies — a great attorney from the LA area who has really gone after the FDA and tried to protect families; Prof Sheldon Krimsky, whose an expert on Conflicts Of Interest; Prof. Lisa Cosgrove, a woman who studied COI and the DSM, or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Menatl Disorders; Dr. John Abramson, a terrific author and researcher; neurologist Fred Baughman;  & many more, including families who have lost loved ones to these drugs.

Crusador:  Do you feel that the trend to mass drug our youth can be reversed or are we just going against the grain of an evil big pharma, big media, big government agenda?

If I didn’t feel I could affect change, I would not have produced a film like GENERATION RX. I’ll let people judge for themselves, but I really believe that the case I’ve outlined will appeal to people’s common sense and resonate throughout the world. With all of the scandals and controversies swirling around psychiatric drugs right now, that should be enough to make people get off their backsides and act. I would request that people buy the DVD from Crusador, host events in their communities and sell the DVDs there. We needed people who want to save children to act and support this important work. That’s what you and Crusador have done, Greg, and I thank you for it.

Crusador:  How long is the film?

81 minutes.

Crusador:  Will the film be out in theaters?

GENERATION RX will play in as many major cities as is possible, and in smaller specialty theaters and art houses across the country. But what we are praying for is to establish a network of community activists nationwide to show this film in hotel meeting rooms and auditoriums. You might recall that this is exactly what we did to spread the word about the threat to health freedom in 1993 via my film LET TRUTH BE THE BIAS. People got involved: health food stores, consumers, practitioners, etc., and it made for a very dynamic and educational event. And we all know that big change happened because we passed DSHEA to protect our freedoms. It’s been going steadily downhill since then because we’ve gotten lazy and complacent. We have to fight for our rights, and GENERATION RX gives people the tools to do so.

Crusador:  Are there some other issues you’d like to cover in the future through documentaries and is there anything our readers can do to help you?

Wow, Greg, there are so many. I’d really love to produce an updated version of my film on Codex, called WE BECOME SILENT. Few people realize that that film was produced in less than a few months’ time in 2005 because I knew how serious the threat from Codex was, and I wanted to get the information out quickly.

I’m humbled by the thousands of letters I received from people all over the world who love WE BECOME SILENT, but there is more to include in the film like Canada’s C-51/52 Bills just north of our borders. So I would love to produce an updated 80-90 minute film and release in by Summertime. If sales are good for GENERATION RX, then I’ll be able to do that.

It’s really needed, Greg, because as you know, many other dubious voices have filled the Internet with fabrications and nonsense about Codex. So I would love to see that happen!

Crusador:  What do you hope to achieve with the film?

I certainly would be glad to have my film be the impetus for the firing of some corrupt FDA officlas who appear in GENERATION RX. That would be very nice. But I also hope to motivate people to action, and use the many facts I’ve put forth in the film as a communication tool with schools, teachers, Police departments, parent and religious groups, healthfood stores, etc.

That way, we would be assured of spreading this particular Gospel far and wide, and we could absolutely change Generation RX for the better.
